How cloud and cybersecurity help healthcare and fintech businesses in BC
Healthcare and fintech organizations in BC face the same dual challenge: adopting cloud tools to work efficiently while protecting highly sensitive data. Done properly, cloud services make these businesses more secure, not less, because they come with encryption, access controls and logging that small on-site setups rarely have.

Why it matters
- Health clinics manage patient records under privacy law. In BC that's usually PIPA for private practices, with PIPEDA applying in some cases, and FIPPA for public bodies.
- Fintech firms handle sensitive financial records and are routinely asked by partners and banks to prove strong security controls.
Both face real consequences from a breach: regulatory reporting, loss of client trust and, for clinics, disrupted patient care.
Cloud services that work for regulated industries
Business-grade cloud platforms provide secure, scalable infrastructure with compliance features built in. The key is configuring them properly:
- Data stored in Canadian regions where clients or regulators expect it
- Encryption at rest and in transit
- Multi-factor authentication and role-based access
- Audit logs kept long enough to investigate incidents
- Separate backups that can restore data without paying a ransom
Security controls we put in place
Star X deploys threat monitoring, business firewalls, endpoint protection and regular security reviews for regulated clients, and documents them so you can answer partner, auditor and insurer questionnaires accurately.
We've helped clinics and financial firms in Richmond and Vancouver move to secure cloud systems, and helped startups in Delta block intrusion attempts that could have exposed customer data.

Questions we hear a lot
Still unsure? Call (778) 312-2227 and ask a technician directly.
Does HIPAA apply to BC clinics?
Generally no. HIPAA is a United States law. BC private clinics are usually covered by BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and some organizations by PIPEDA. Public bodies such as health authorities fall under FIPPA. Check with a privacy advisor for your situation.
Can patient or financial data be stored in the cloud?
Yes, with the right safeguards: a reputable provider, encryption, strong access controls, logging, backups and, where needed, data stored in Canadian regions. Microsoft, Google and AWS all offer Canadian data centre options.
